Simon Tam was considered gifted since birth, and this brilliant child grew to become a brilliant young doctor, a rising star amongst the allied, civilized planets. Though he was overshadowed by his younger sister, this didn't hold him back from excelling himself, and while River went away to school, Simon graduated from medical school. Everyone said he had a promising future ahead of him.
Then Simon received a letter from River, after a long silence. Realizing that River was in danger, Simon began to search for her, to try to rescue her from the school where she was being harmed. He squandered his entire fortune making the contacts that allowed him to get into the facility where they were experimenting with his sister's brain, and he successfully managed to put her in cryo, and then smuggle her to the outer planets.
There, Simon came aboard a Firefly named Serenity as a passenger. While the ship's crew (especially the captain, Mal) was angry with him at first for bringing further Alliance scrutiny upon them, he has since become a part of the family. He acts as their ship medic, and spends all of his free hours trying to find out what they did to River, and help her.
